The Final Countdown from the Soccer Field

January 13th, 2009 by John

Soccer, one of the most popular games in the US has gripped the country for the whole year. There had been much news this year. Many of the Italian-American community players have gone back to Italy to hone their skills. The most important player being Gabe Ferrari. He is getting an exposure to learn from experienced players in Italy. The younger lot that includes players like Vincenzo Bernardo also has proceeded to Italy. Bernardo is playing inItaly with Ezequiel Lavezzi, Leo Messi and Giuseppe Rossi. Playing with the great players gives the new players a chance to learn from the best. The practical knowledge that they get from the seasoned players is always more than what they can otherwise learn.

The US players are dwindling in English Premier League. At the start of the new English season, only four US players are on the roaster. Out of these four one is a new comer. The greatest change occurred at Fulhum. They had five US players last season but only Clint Dempsey is left there. Rest has all come back.Marcus Hahnemann and Bobby convey are still playing for Reading whereas Jay De Merit is continuing with Watford.

Wisconsin gets a new coach in form of Todd Yeagley.Yeagley, son of the legendary footballer Jerry Yeagley, was a midfielder in MLS and had bagged the prestigious national collegiate ‘Player of the Year’ award. Yeagley substitutes Jeff Rohrman who was Wisconsin coach for the last seven seasons. Yeagley has spent the last six seasons at Indiana as assistant coach. He has promised to groom the teams and players as champions. His accomplishment as a collegiate will certainly help Wisconsin do well in the coming season.

Major League Soccer Officials congregated in LA for MLS Cup 2009 and the talk of the town was their expansion plan. Initially it was thought with a lot of certainty that Miami and Montreal will be the next two members. But due to some financial goof ups Montreal has backed out leaving the field wide open for others. If MLS wish to expand in Canada then they do have an option of taking Vancouver or Ottawa on their roll. After the rounds of presentations, it seems MLS is bowled over by Ottawa. The presentation was very vivid and Ottawa had a very focused plan of not only building the stadium but also how they will build the game. The presentation seems to make them the hot favorite to get a place in the MLS.
